You will listen to four recordings and answer questions. The recordings include a conversation between two people, a monologue, a conversation in an educational context, and an academic lecture.

  • You hear each recording only ONCE
  • Questions follow the order of the audio
  • Read questions before listening
Reading
60 minutes

3 passages, 40 questions

Academic: Three long texts from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. General Training: Texts from notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and newspapers.

Expert Tips:

  • Don't read every word - skim and scan
  • Spend about 20 minutes per passage
  • Answer questions you're sure of first
Writing

2 tasks

Task 1 (20 min): Describe visual information (Academic) or write a letter (General). Task 2 (40 min): Write an essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem.

Expert Tips:

  • Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1
  • Plan before you write (5 minutes planning)
  • Academic Task 1: minimum 150 words, Task 2: minimum 250 words
Speaking
11-14 minutes

3 parts, face-to-face interview

Part 1: Introduction and familiar topics (4-5 min). Part 2: Long turn with cue card (3-4 min). Part 3: Discussion of abstract ideas related to Part 2 (4-5 min).

Expert Tips:

  • Speak naturally - don't memorize scripts
  • Extend your answers with reasons and examples
  • It's okay to ask for clarification
IELTS Band Score Descriptors

IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale. Each band corresponds to a specific level of English competence. You will receive a band score for each module and an Overall Band Score (the average of the four).
