What Are Phrasal Verbs?

Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb and one or more particles (prepositions or adverbs) that create a new meaning different from the original verb.

Types of Phrasal Verbs

1. Separable Phrasal Verbs

The object can go between the verb and particle:

  • "Turn off the light" OR "Turn the light off"
  • "Pick up your clothes" OR "Pick your clothes up"
  • **Note:** Pronouns MUST go in the middle:

  • Correct: "Turn it off"
  • Incorrect: "Turn off it"
  • 2. Inseparable Phrasal Verbs

The object must come after the particle:

  • "Look after the children" (NOT "Look the children after")
  • "Run into a friend" (NOT "Run a friend into")
  • 3. Three-word Phrasal Verbs

  • "Put up with" (tolerate)
  • "Look forward to" (anticipate)
  • "Get along with" (have a good relationship)
